Haroon Gunn-Salie
Amongst Men
Haroon Gunn-Salie was born in 1989 in Cape Town, South Africa. He completed a BA Hons in sculpture at the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2012. An artist and activist who believes that art has real potential to effect change in society, he translates oral histories grounded in community into artistic interventions and installations. Gunn-Salie's multidisciplinary practice puts the emphasis on collaboration, based on socially engaged dialogue and exchange.
His solo exhibitions include those at Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town (2021); Mendes Wood DM and Galpão Videobrasil, São Paulo, and Museu de Congonhas, Brazil (2016); and Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg (2015). His work has also been shown in significant group exhibitions including the New Museum Triennial, New York, and Frieze Sculpture, Regent’s Park, London (2018); the South African Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2015); and the Festival de Arte Contemporânea Sesc_Videobrasil, São Paulo (2015). In 2015 he was the first winner of the SP-Arte/Videobrasil Prize, intended to encourage the work of young artists focusing on the debates around the Global South; and in 2018 he was awarded the FNB Art Prize.
