About the event
Dr. Joachim Pissarro will trace the evolution of biennials from their 1895 Enlightenment origins—marked by a rejection of spiritual concerns and a linear “thermometer” of artistic progress—to today’s Islamic Biennales, which embody a new “star” model. By reintegrating religion into the exhibition, these events replace the singular avant-garde with a multi-directional constellation of creative vectors, challenging the idea that art advances by casting off faith and prompting a reappraisal of the biennale’s Enlightenment foundations.
Dr. Pissarro will then be in discussion with Aya Al Bakree (CEO of the Biennale Foundation), Sumayya Valley (not confirmed), Saad Al Rashid (not confirmed), Julian Raby, and Dr. Abdulrahman Azzam.
