Preservation and Conservation in the Vatican Library

In this session, Marta Grimaccia and Simone Olini, book conservators at the Vatican Library, will present the history of book conservation and preservation at the Library since its foundation in the 15th century. Over nearly six centuries, both the concept and practice of conservation have evolved significantly, from viewing the book merely as a vehicle for text to recognizing it as an archaeological artifact that must continue to be accessible and usable.

Grimaccia and Olini will discuss how conservators at the Vatican Library have continuously adapted their methods to respond to the practical demands of both preservation and consultation. While embracing innovation, they remain deeply rooted in tradition, honoring the Library’s guiding principles of safeguarding cultural heritage and ensuring ongoing access to its collections.
