Navigating the Seas: A Workshop on Historical Nautical Instruments

About the event

Step back in time to an era when sailors relied on the stars and groundbreaking instruments to traverse uncharted waters. Long before the Portuguese expanded their voyages to India, Brazil, and Japan, maritime navigation was deeply rooted in knowledge from the Muslim world, blending mathematical precision with practical tools.

This workshop explores the evolution of navigation, from coastal sailing with simple aids to the scientific breakthroughs that allowed sailors to journey across open seas in the 16th century. Participants will discover iconic tools like the quadrant, cross-staff, and astrolabe—essential for measuring star altitudes and determining ship positions.

What will you learn?
This hands-on workshop explores the history and evolution of navigational instruments and provides practical application in using these tools.

Who is it for?
This workshop is perfect for adults interested in maritime exploration and history.
