About the event
Hamam Al Ayn is a public bath established 600 years ago as part of the extensive waterworks of early Ottoman Jerusalem. The Hamam borders both Bab al Qattaneen to the Aqsa compound and the Khalidi Library complex on nearby Bab Al Silsilah. It remained in operation until Israeli occupation forced its closure in the 1970s.
The presentation, by Palestinian oral historian and writer Emtiaz Diab, who authored a book published in 2012 on the Hamam’s history and the personalities associated with it, will bring to life this unique monument to Jerusalem’s rich architectural heritage and social history. The Hamam also has a special link to the Khalidi Library, through a waqf dedicated to the Library’s operation, with income generated from the Hamam’s activities. Drawing especially on the oral histories recounted in the book, the presentation will further anchor the Library in a millennial history of cultural and social development.
